Age Innovation Prize honors innovative medical technology

The OST Ostschweizer Fachhochschule, MovementSciences and BIOS Medical have won the Age Innovation Prize 2023. The competition is organized by OST together with EY and Switzerland Innovation Park Ost.

A spine cushion from MovementSciences AG, a radar for monitoring vital parameters from OST - Ostschweizer Fachhochschule(OST) and a mobility sensor from BIOS Medical AG have won the Age Innovation Prize 2023. Launched for the first time this year, the competition is organized by the OST's Institute for Ageing Research in cooperation with Switzerland Innovation Park Ost and the consulting firm EY. The prize "honors innovative projects that promote the independence, autonomy, quality of life and health of older people," the OST said in a press release.

The Pegasus Spine spine cushion allows the spine to rotate when lying or sitting, similar to normal walking movements. "In daily use, the Pegasus Spine improves the mobility of older people, relieves pain and reduces the risk of falls," said Pascual Brunner, CEO of MovementSciences AG, in the press release. The company from Dübendorf received the prize in the best product category for its cushion.

The OST's MIMO radar determines position and vital parameters such as breathing, heart rate, sleeping position and heart rate variability. "Our solution is particularly powerful because it uses artificial intelligence to determine these parameters and does not require manual evaluation by experts," says Michael Gottinger from the OST's Institute for Electronics, Sensors and Actuators. The university institute was honored in the best project idea category.

The HIPbeacon long-term mobility sensor is used for follow-up care after a hip fracture. "The HIPbeacon has great potential to give patients back the quality of life they had before the injury and to reduce the mortality rate and the need for admission to a nursing home," explains Markus Windolf, CEO and founder of BIOS Medical AG. The company from Davos came out on top in the best young company category. ce/hs
