Balgrist University Hospital opens new research center

Balgrist University Hospital has inaugurated its new center for research and teaching. With the fully equipped OR-X operating room and a skills lab, it aims to provide an optimal environment for medical innovation and surgeon training.

Balgrist University Hospital has officially opened its tenth operating room (Operation Room X, OR-X). The OR-X is a national research institution and surgical teaching and research center. There will be no patient operations there, according to a media release. The centerpiece is reportedly the fully equipped operating room and a so-called skills lab for medical research. For training and larger research experiments with multiple participants, the skills lab with its six surgical workstations offers perfect conditions, the hospital said.

Teaching is done on 3D-printed models, simulators and human specimens. A realistic infrastructure with technical facilities such as intraoperative artificial intelligence, navigation systems, surgical robots and applications supported by augmented reality are available for surgical education and training.

For the opening on August 24 and 25, 250 guests from politics, health care and business were invited. In addition to a tour of OR-X, the event included speeches by Rita Fuhrer, president of the Balgrist Association, hospital directors Mazda Farshad and Thomas Huggler, Swissmem president Martin Hirzel, and OR-X co-founder Philipp Fürnstahl. ce/ww
