BTRY Receives 2.2 Million Euros in EU Funding for Ultra-Thin Batteries

Dübendorf, ZH — BTRY AG is receiving 2.2 million euros in funding from the European Union’s EIC Accelerator program. The company plans to use the funds, among other things, to lay the groundwork for Europe’s first factory for solid-state thin-film batteries.

(CONNECT) BTRY has been selected in the screening process for the EU's EIC Accelerator funding program. According to a press release, the spin-off from the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) is receiving 2.2 million euros to further develop its flexible and ultrathin solid-state batteries.

In the current funding round, 38 companies from across Europe were selected; the success rate was less than 5 percent.

BTRY plans to use the funds to accelerate the industrialization of its technology, prepare for market launch, and lay the groundwork for Europe's first industrial facility for thin-film solid-state batteries. It is expected to be capable of producing millions of batteries annually.

Founded in 2023 and headquartered in Dübendorf, the startup develops ultra-thin thin-film batteries that use solid-state materials instead of liquid electrolytes for applications in the industrial, Internet of Things (IoT), medical technology, and wearables sectors. The batteries are designed to combine energy storage and high power output in a single solution. A solvent-free vacuum coating process based on roll-to-roll systems from the semiconductor industry is also expected to enable scalable and cost-effective production.

The EIC Accelerator invests in startups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are developing an innovative technology, service, or business model with the potential to create new markets or bring about lasting change in existing markets. ce/as
