Dübendorf, Zürich – The start-up BTRY has secured financing of 900,000 Swiss francs. The Empa spin-off manufactures batteries based on thin-film solids.
In a pre-seed round, the Dübendorf-based startup BTRY secured financing of 900,000 Swiss francs. According to a press release, the financing was provided by the High-Tech Gründerfonds(HTGF) and the Zürcher Kantonalbank(ZKB).
The spin-off from the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology(Empa) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich(ETH) is developing safe and durable batteries based on thin-film solid-state technology. These lithium-ion batteries should offer advantages in various commercial applications, according to the press release.
Thanks to a new technology, it has been possible to stack thin-film cells, which are only a few micrometers thick, to create more powerful batteries. This involves the use of highly precise vacuum coating, without toxic solvents. Moreover, the production has been proven to be scalable, utilizing advanced and proven techniques to ensure efficiency and quality.
"This financing round, only eight months after the acquisition of BTRY is a significant milestone for us and we are delighted to have such great partners at our side", Moritz Futscher, CEO and co-founder of BTRY, is quoted in the press release, "we are highly motivated to take the next steps together to make our vision a reality - revolutionizing energy storage".
"We are convinced that innovative battery concepts will play a crucial role in future product developments. The material and process innovations of 'BTRY' promise, as a result, an all-solid-state battery solution with highly interesting and unique technological selling propositions, opening up a broad spectrum of applications,"explains Timo Bertsch, Investment Manager at HTGF. ce/ww
