Canton of Zurich seeks new projects for AI sandbox

Zurich – The Canton of Zurich’s location promotion agency has opened the application phase for the third Innovation Sandbox for Artificial Intelligence (AI). The secure test environment is open to projects that can benefit from the clarification of regulatory issues and data from the administration’s ecosystem for their implementation.

(CONNECT) The Canton of Zurich's Division of Business and Economic Development agency is looking for the most promising AI projects for Phase III of its Innovation Sandbox. Start-ups, SMEs, large companies and research institutes based in Switzerland can submit their applications from now until May 24th. If they are selected in a multi-stage selection process, they gain access to regulatory expertise and innovative data sources.

The aim is to enable data-based developments, use such innovations to promote the Zurich metropolitan area in a targeted manner and strengthen it as a leading AI location. In contrast to many foreign approaches, the Innovation Sandbox for AI goes one step further, according to the project description: the selected projects are not only reviewed, but also implemented in practice.

The joint work in the sandbox also ensures the transfer of knowledge between the participating organizations. All findings and results will be shared publicly and should provide valuable impetus for the design of a future legal framework. The project managers will carry out an evaluation process by June 26th, 2026. The third phase of the Innovation Sandbox begins on September 1st.

The canton's location promotion agency ran the first Innovation Sandbox for AI from 2022 to 2024. In Phase II, which began in the same year, 24 organizations submitted their AI projects. The project team successfully implemented five of these by the beginning of 2026. A final report will be published in the coming months. ce/mm
