Ecomade opens pop-up store in Zurich

Joel Hügli is launching his start-up ecomade on the market. The opening of the online store and a pop-up store on Langstrasse in Zurich will be celebrated on September 20, ecomade announced in a press release. Ecomade specializes in the development and distribution of recyclable mattresses. The opening is part of the Zurich Design Weeks from September 12 to 29.

Hügli wants to "show the big Swiss players how mattresses can be recyclable", according to the press release. The company founder laid the foundations for this in a design master's thesis at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. The concept and prototype of his mattresses were awarded the Swiss Design Prize 2023 and Swiss Design Award 2024. His design principles for sustainable mattresses were published online by the Swiss Mattress Alliance as ecodesign guidelines.

"With our ecomade mattresses, we want to ensure that all Swiss people can sleep carefree in the future and that there are no more mattresses lying around on the roadside," Hügli is quoted as saying. The washable and replaceable covers of the ecomade mattresses are made from organic cotton and Swiss sheep's wool. The mattress core consists of springs and is supported by elements made from recycled composite foam. At the end of their useful life, ecomade recovers the mattresses and recycles 80 percent of their components. ce/hs
