Winterthur – GreenState is transferring its expertise in vertical farms to small growing devices for the kitchen or living room. Initially, basil can be grown in the compact GrowBorg, which is powered by artificial intelligence (AI), but other herbs will also be grown in the future.
(CONNECT) GreenState has launched GrowBorg.ai for home herb cultivation. The Winterthur-based start-up has thus transferred its experience in vertical farming to a compact, artificial intelligence-based device for the home.
As GreenState explains in a press release, the device is equipped with full spectrum light, water and GPS sensors as well as a small camera. It continuously monitors the plant and sends performance data to a central system. "It's like a personal gardener who never sleeps," says GreenState.
In amateur mode, the device follows proven industrial procedures as used in professional vertical farms. In professional mode, users can develop their own growth strategies and compare themselves with others, including the company's own AI, to find out who grows the best basil.
Owners can use an app to track plant growth, receive notifications about water and temperature values and share photos and recipes. An integrated blog provides gardening tips. The AI chatbot answers questions about plants and the device.
"When it comes to the GrowBorgs, it is very important to mention that we built everything ourselves, that we own the intellectual property of the GrowBorgs," says CEO Arsenije Grgur in his CEO video report from March 2025. They are also assembled in Switzerland.
In May 2024, GreenState took over its competitor Yasai and, according to Grgur, also its pilot project with the Migros food chain. Like Yasai, GreenState has also been cooperating with Coop AG for some time, according to Grgur. Financing has been secured for a new XL farm. It should be completed and fully operational by mid-2026 and generate an annual turnover of 30 million Swiss francs.
GreenState is one of twelve Swiss exhibitors in the SWISS Pavilion at GITEX Global 2025. The world's largest tech, start-up and AI trade fair will take place in Dubai from October 13 to 17. ce/mm
