HeiQ Opens Laboratory for Precision Fermentation

Schlieren ZH – HeiQ is setting up its competence center for the development of bio-based materials using precision fermentation in Schlieren. In the laboratory, microbes are programmed to produce certain molecules, for example for wound care, cosmetics, textiles and hygiene.

(CONNECT) HeiQ is strengthening its position in sustainable biotechnology by setting up a laboratory for precision fermentation in the Schlieren biotech cluster. In the new competence center, the company intends to produce bio-based high-performance materials for wound care, cosmetics, textiles, packaging, cleaning agents and water treatment.

In a press release, HeiQ cites a market study from October 2025, according to which the global market will grow from 4.25 billion dollars in 2024 to 290.03 billion dollars in 2035. This corresponds to an annual growth rate of 46.8 percent.

Precision fermentation is a biotechnological production process on an industrial scale that uses customized production organisms and intelligent bioprocesses to produce complex chemicals and active ingredients. Bacteria, fungi or yeasts are specifically programmed to produce certain molecules, for example proteins, without the animal. The technology is considered sustainable, effective and flexibly adaptable.

The new HeiQ laboratory is equipped for the development of microorganism strains, the optimization of fermentation and the further development of pilot processes and is intended to build a bridge between discovery and pre-commercial scaling and validation. HeiQ's partners from the aforementioned sectors should benefit from this.
