Schlieren ZH – KUORI is now making its filament for 3D printing available to end users. The cleantech start-up has set up an online store for this purpose. The market-ready elastic material is made from olive pits and walnut shells and is fully compostable.
(CONNECT) KUORI GmbH has set up an online store for its BIOWA filaments. This means that the product of the cleantech company based in the Bio-Technopark Schlieren-Zurich is not only available for B2B customers as before, but now also for 3D printing applications for B2C customers. "If we and our partners can print with BIOWA materials, why can't everyone else?" KUORI's 3D print process engineer Simone Battaglia is quoted as saying in a press release.
The company, founded by CEO Sarah Harbarth, produces BIOWA from food production waste such as walnut shells and olive pits. The result is a bio-based, biodegradable and recyclable thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) and rubber. The TPE filament offered online on a spool weighs 700 grams, is light brown in color and has a diameter of 1.75 mm.
According to KUORI, its proportion of bio-based ingredients is between 40 and 74 percent. Compared to conventional ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA)-based materials, 60 percent less CO2-equivalent emissions are generated. And due to their chemical structure, microplastic particles released by abrasion of the material are broken down by water and enzymes. Examples of applications include watch straps, flip-flops and sandals, table tennis bats and bracelets.
In addition to BIOWA, BIOWA HD is also available for the industry for even faster compostability. Both are also available in granular form and are suitable for injection molding, extrusion, compression molding and 3D printing.
"Our platform for post-oil-based materials is equivalent in performance to conventional plastics and at the same time offers solutions that can be seamlessly integrated into existing processes and avoid the use of fossil raw materials and microplastic pollution," summarizes KUORI in the press release.
