Kuros enrolls first patient with foot fracture in study

Schlieren ZH – The first patient is being treated in Kuros Biosciences’ ASTRA study on fusion in the hind foot and ankle. In addition to ongoing studies on the spine, the use of the Kuros graft MagnetOs for bone healing is now to be extended to fractures in the foot.

(CONNECT) Kuros Biosciences ' MagnetOs bone graft is being used for the first time in a patient requiring a hindfoot fusion, according to a statement. The study, called ASTRA, evaluates the safety and performance of MagnetOs compared to autologous bone grafts in 126 patients undergoing hindfoot or ankle fusion.

Building on the results of the ongoing PROOF and PRECISE Level I clinical trials on spinal fusion, ASTRA "expands our portfolio of clinical evidence to the foot and ankle," Kuros CEO Chris Fair is quoted as saying. "We are proud to be advancing the science of bone healing into new anatomical areas where surgeons need reliable solutions for their patients."

This international study will include locations in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the Middle East. "Successful bone fusion in complex hindfoot and ankle procedures can be challenging, especially when the availability or quality of autograft is limited," said Dr. Jesse Doty, orthopaedic surgeon and principal investigator at Erlanger Orthopaedics in Chattanooga, Tennessee. "I am excited to be part of this Level I trial investigating the efficacy of a novel advanced bone graft in my patients with hindfoot fusion."
