Winterthur – Lucky Shrimp AG officially opened for business on September 25. The Winterthur-based start-up has invested 4.5 million Swiss francs in the construction of its aquaculture facility. Around 20 tons of shrimp are to be bred here every year. Lucky Shrimp also intends to sell modular breeding systems.
Lucky Shrimp AG was officially opened on September 25 in the presence of the Mayor of Winterthur, Michael Künzle. This means that Zurich's first shrimp farm is now up and running, writes the Winterthur start-up in a press release. Lucky Shrimp has invested a total of 4.5 million Swiss francs in the aquaculture facility set up in an industrial hall in Oberwinterthur.
The system consists of 13 water tanks with a total capacity of around 550 cubic meters. They are encased in a cube made of sustainable Swiss wood. The closed-loop system is modeled on the natural ecosystem in the mangroves, explains Lucky Shrimp. In aquaculture, around 20 tons of shrimp are to be farmed sustainably and without the use of antibiotics every year.
However, Lucky Shrimp does not want to limit itself to shrimp breeding. The biotech is planning a second mainstay with the sale of modular breeding systems. They could be used in unused industrial halls or farms and replace the import of shrimps from farms in Asia or South America, according to the press release.
Interested parties are invited to see the shrimp farm for themselves on October 5. In addition to guided tours, visitors will have the opportunity to "convince themselves of the quality of Lucky Shrimps with exclusive shrimp dishes on site", the company writes. ce/hs
