In the latest episode of the podcast Marktplatz Gesundheitswesen, Florian Rüten and Daniel Volken address the omnipresent costs in the Swiss healthcare system, how rising premiums are placing an increasing burden on household budgets, and hospitals that are experiencing financial difficulties and are partially dependent on cantonal support.
The costs in the Swiss health care system are omnipresent. Rising premiums are placing an increasing burden on household budgets, and almost every month there are reports of hospitals running into financial difficulties, some of which are dependent on cantonal support. Particularly against the backdrop of the increasingly strained financial situation, it is all the more astonishing that nowadays we have to contend with misuse and overuse in many places - i.e. with interventions that are too frequent, unnecessary or even harmful to health. In total, 7-8 billion Swiss francs are lost in the healthcare system in this way - resources that could undoubtedly be used more effectively elsewhere. So why not apply the concept of "Value Based Healthcare" (VBHC) instead, as is already practiced in Sweden and the USA? Here, the patient is at the center of the Patient Journey, and financial resources are targeted to medical benefits and enhancing patients' quality of life. In the VBHC approach, treatment is not considered successful until it helps restore or improve the patient's quality of life. To find out whether and how this promising concept is proving itself in practice, Alfred Angerer has Dr. Florian Rüter, Head of Quality Management & Value Based Health Care, and Daniel Volken, Deputy Director of Groupe Mutuel, as guests. In collaboration with the University Hospital Basel, they launched the "Pay for Performance" project three years ago with the aim of developing a quality- and benefit-based payment system. Both objective medical quality parameters and patient-related quality parameters (PROMs) are taken into account. This podcast episode was made possible with the kind support of Groupe Mutuel.
