Zurich/Schlieren ZH – The Zurich start-up Sallea is able to drive forward the production of cultured meat with 2.6 million dollars from a pre-seed financing round. Sallea intends to supply its 3D cell scaffolding for this purpose. They enable cultivation companies to grow whole pieces of meat such as steaks and fillets.
Sallea has raised 2.6 million dollars in a pre-seed financing round. According to a statement from Venture Kick, it was led by the two venture capital companies Founderful from Zurich and Kost Capital from Copenhagen. This is the first equity investment by the all-female start-up. The young company had already received 1.8 million dollars in non-dilutive grants. Sallea won the final round of Venture Kick in November 2023 and was voted one of the TOP 100 Swiss start-ups in the same year.
Sallea's technology is the result of research by CTO Nicole Kleger, CEO Simona Fehlmann and CCO Anna Bünter at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich . The three women are developing edible 3D cell scaffolds that enable the cultivation of textured meat and fish pieces. This process is intended to improve the nutritional profile and texture of cultured foods.
"I am very grateful to Venture Kick," says CEO Fehlmann. The support from the Schlieren-based start-up promoter has also enabled the young company to "deal with all topics outside of technical development, which is essential for the further development of an idea from university to a product and a company.
