Schlieren ZH – VirtaMed has added a colorectal surgery module to the LaparoS laparoscopy simulator. This means that operations on the rectum and colon can be practiced realistically.
VirtaMed , a Schlieren-based company specializing in medical simulators, is presenting its latest innovation in surgical training. With the LaparoS colorectal surgery module, surgeons and residents can learn and practice mastering the correct hemicolectomy procedure, according to a message on LinkedIn.
This module not only raises the standard of surgical training, but also has the potential to improve patient outcomes. Colorectal surgery deals with the surgical treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the rectum and colon.
Colorectal cancer has a significant impact on global health: 40 percent of these cancers are located in the right colon. Laparoscopy has become the standard of care, according to VirtaMed. However, one of the biggest hurdles was the limited training modalities available for hemicolectomy, an important procedure for treating this disease. Traditional training methods such as the use of pig intestines or cadaver models without blood flow have their limits. This is true with regard to the anatomical accuracy and complexity of vessel identification and treatment.
The LaparoS Colorectal Surgery Module - the name of the new module - creates a highly realistic virtual training environment with haptic feedback.
