Young, dynamic, different. What originally started as a research project at ETH Zurich and the University of St. Gallen is now a highly motivated and efficient team that solves customers’ problems in the field of renewable energies with state-of-the-art technology.
Our company was founded in 2020 as a spinoff of ETH Zurich by a team of former PhD students (Liliane Ableitner, Arne Meeuw and Anselma Wörner) who were convinced that software could be a powerful tool to make the energy sector more efficient and sustainable. Our research has been published in leading scientific journals such as Nature Energy, Applied Energy, Computer Communications and Information Systems Research.
Today, the Exnaton team consists of engineers and entrepreneurs with diverse backgrounds and skills, of which we are all very proud. We already have eight nationalities in our team. Some of us have attended top universities such as ETH Zurich, University of St. Gallen, Stanford University or TU Munich, others have no university degree. Some of us have gained experience at established companies like GE, IBM or McKinsey, others have worked in start-ups like Amphiro or Auterion. Together we combine our knowledge to develop innovative and user-friendly applications for renewable energies.
Exnaton AG is based in Switzerland, where we founded the first energy community in the country and one of the first in the world. Our software platform provides unprecedented insight into the energy consumption of individual households by enabling users to trade renewable energy from local sources. In this way, our software creates added value from smart meter data for energy utilities and helps to actively drive the energy transition. Our goal is to become the leading software platform for tomorrow’s decentralised energy market.

Digitization has technical (“Can we do that?”) and economic (“Do we want that?”), but also ethical (“Should we?”) and legal (“May we?”) aspects. Of course, this also applies to innovations in the financial sector. Economists, technicians and lawyers are therefore needed to assess these. These must talk to each other, but above all understand each other and think together.
